Every year, I recount my October horror watches by reviewing them in haiku form. This year, I got a bit of a head start (on Friday the...12th? Close enough...) because I knew I was going to have lots of non-horror on my calendar standing in my way. But because I started early, I’m already ready to do the first recap! Will this be the first October where I have enough for three editions of Haiku Reviews? Let’s find out together. Until then, enjoy the first batch of first-time watches.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931)
Maybe the best black
and white horror film that you
still need to check out.
Addams Family Values (1993)
A significant
improvement on the first film
in every way
Tales from the Hood (1995)
It is all great, but
“Boys Do Get Bruised” really just
stands above the rest.
Hostel (2006)
I feel like I’m the
Norman Rockwell meme when it
comes to this movie
Let the Right One In (2008)
If you want to watch
the same movie beat-for-beat,
then watch the remake!
Warlock (1991)
If “Hocus Pocus”
and “Starman” had a quite
underrated baby.
The Black Room (1935)
Double Karloff is
twice as nice; dogs are better
than every human.
Nightmare Weekend (1986)
The best part was when
the guy stuffed his flask between
two pieces of bread.
V/H/S (2012)
Oh, so these were just
always a mixed bag? The best
was “Amateur Night.”
Him (2025)
I appreciate
Marlon Wayans, but I don’t
think cult crowds will care
